The audience bursts into the room of a theatre director who plans to stage "Romeo and Juliet" and demands him to create a theatre that exposes all the dark and hidden places. Like in a dream, layers are uncovered and images, figures and events from the director's soul are revealed. The play deals with the tension between the artist and the audience, with the internalization of social condemnation, and with the conflict between erotic and artistic freedom, on the one side, and censorship and self-censorship, on the other.
אל חדרו של במאי המתכנן להעלות את ההצגה ״רומיאו ויוליה״ פורץ קהל הדורש ממנו ליצור תיאטרון החושף את המקומות הנסתרים והחשוכים. כמו בתוך חלום מתקלפות שכבות ונחשפים דימויים, דמויות והתרחשויות הנמצאים בתוך נפשו של הבמאי. המחזה עוסק במתח שבין היוצר לקהל, בהפנמה של ביקורת חברתית ובעימות שבין חופש של אירוטיקה ושל אמנות לבין צנזורה וצנזורה עצמית.
Process
The play "The Public" is an unfinished draft that was not intended to be staged. Lorca was wary of the play's publication: "I have no illusions that my play, known as 'The Public', will be performed here or anywhere else in the world. I believe that there is no theatre company that will stage it and no audience that will bear it". The play demanded from us multiple readings and deciphering. We learned to walk into the trap where whoever lives inside a dream is caught, and to embrace the impossibility of logically decoding the world. At the same time, we found in the play's cryptic and enigmatic world a freedom to say what cannot be openly spoken.

המחזה ״הקהל״ הוא טיוטא לא גמורה שנכתבה למגירה. לורקה חשש מחשיפתו של המחזה: ״אין לי אשליות שהמחזה שלי המכונה ״הקהל״ יוצג כאן או בכל מקום אחר בעולם, ואני מאמין שאין להקת תיאטרון שתעלה אותו ולא קהל צופים שיסבול אותו״. המחזה דרש מאיתנו קריאות חוזרות ועבודת פיענוח. למדנו לצעוד בתוך המלכודת שבה לכוד מי שחי בתוך חלום, ולהשלים עם הקושי לפענח בהיגיון את העולם. בד בבד מצאנו בעולם הלא מובן והחידתי של המחזה חופש לומר את מה שלא ניתן לומר בגלוי.
